Dealing with Non-Believing Co-Workers

Posted by Justin Tilghman on August 17, 2010 at 8:19 PM

Hi everyone,

This is something that has really been weighing heavily on me.  I'm fairly new to the Fire/EMS scene and I've noticed that, at least in my department, Christian technicians and firefighters are the minority.  I've ridden quite a few shifts and been with many different partners and none of them have been believers.  They're all caught up in the secular.  Conversations are generally full of immensely profane language, exceptionally crude jokes, and stories of parties and how they intend to spend their off-time which usually entails drinking until they can't stomach anymore but leaving enough time to sober up for their next shift. And the attitude, 99.9% of the time leads them to extreme cynicism concerning their job and inevitably crosses over into the patient care realm. After every single shift I find myself completely spiritually and emotionally drained and it's not necessarily because of the calls that I've run that shift, but more so with the verbal and emotional garbage that I have seen or heard.  It hurts because I understand that there's so much more to life and that this profession is an AMAZING opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ.  I was just curious how some of you veterans of the profession have dealt with similar people and situations.  I'm just a brother trying to find some encouragement haha.

Justin I can feel your pain and discourgaement, that is what I ran into when I got my life back in line with God. That is why I started the FCP so that there could be a place for people like yourself to come and get encourgaement. I have found that if you pray every morning before your shift and then pray several times through out the day that things seem to be a little better. I can say just do not give up on your Faith and satnd firm and trust in God and when the guys start talking about those things then what I done was left the room. I have noticed a diffrence now that they will most of the time not talk like that around me or they will stp when I come in the room. Please understand that it will take a little while for this to start to happen and I know that you will get frustrated just hang in there and things will start to improve. I will also suggest that you find you a couple of close friends either in this field or even at church that you can talk to about what is going on and allow them to pray with you that will also help. You can call me anytime that you need to my number is (502)542-0426. God will walk this walk with you just hold His hand and let Him lead.
