Sleep Depervation

Posted by Charles E. Harris Jr on September 22, 2010 at 11:05 AM

I wanted to ask how everyone else feels about the subject of sleep depervation? I use to be against anyone or anything that would go against us working a 24 hour shift, until I went to the Kentucky State EMS Conference last week and sit in on a class about sleep depervation. I know think we need to take a step back and rethink the way we work our shifts in fire and ems.

Personally I'm in favor of 12 hr shifts. I know that I'm not mentally on top of my game like I should be when I'm paged out at 5am after a night full of calls with little to no sleep. Many of my coworkers despise 12 hr shifts haha but I personally think that pt care is benefitted best by a 12 hr shift. I know the local Critical Care Air Ambulance and Transport service will only allow their medics and nurses to work a 12hr shift and I think that sleep deprivation is one major reason for that.
